  1. 1932-1963. US poet and novelist. Plath's
  2. powerful, highly personal poems, often
  3. expressing a sense of desolation, are
  4. distinguished by their intensity and sharp
  5. imagery. Collections include The Colossus
  6. 1960; Ariel 1965, published after her death;
  7. and Collected Poems 1981, which was awarded a
  8. Pulitzer Prize. Her autobiographical novel,
  9. The Bell Jar 1961, deals with the events
  10. surrounding a young woman's emotional
  11. breakdown. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she
  12. attended Smith College and was awarded a
  13. Fulbright scholarship to study at Cambridge
  14. University, England, where she met the poet
  15. Ted Hughes, whom she married 1956; they
  16. separated in 1962. She committed suicide
  17. while living in London.
